Cardiac troponin T is a thin filament protein which takes part in muscle contraction.Three troponin T genes have been described on the basis of molecular cloning in humans (Townsend et al. 1994). These are expressed in a tissue-specific manner and encode the troponin T isoforms expressed in cardiac muscle, slow skeletal muscle, and fast skeletal muscle, respectively. The human heart expresses four cTnT isoforms (cTnT1 through cTnT4) which is very cardiac specific, and not present in the serum following nonmyocardial muscle or other tissue damage (Gerhardt et al. 1991) are routinely used to identify acute myocardial ischemia.
