The RPL18A gene, located on 19p13.11, is conserved in chimpanzee, Rhesus monkey, dog, cow, and mouse, etc. This gene encodes a member of the L18AE family of ribosomal proteins that is a component of the 60S subunit. The encoded protein may play a role in viral replication by interacting with the hepatitis C virus internal ribosome entry site (IRES). This gene is co-transcribed with the U68 snoRNA, located within the third intron. RPL18A is widely expressed in the ovary, lymph node, and other tissues. Diseases associated with RPL18A include Hepatitis C Virus and Omsk Hemorrhagic Fever. Among its related pathways are rRNA processing in the nucleus and cytosol and Viral mRNA Translation.
