Product Notes

The CelRed nucleic acid gel stain (Catalog #AAA27979) is a Reagent and is intended for research purposes only. The product is available for immediate purchase. It is sometimes possible for the material contained within the vial of "CelRed nucleic acid gel stain, Reagent" to become dispersed throughout the inside of the vial, particularly around the seal of said vial, during shipment and storage. We always suggest centrifuging these vials to consolidate all of the liquid away from the lid and to the bottom of the vial prior to opening. Please be advised that certain products may require dry ice for shipping and that, if this is the case, an additional dry ice fee may also be required.

Frequently Asked Questions

What types of nucleic acids can CelRed detect?

CelRed detects double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) and, to a lesser extent, double-stranded RNA (dsRNA). It binds to the minor groove of double-helical nucleic acids. CelRed is primarily optimized for DNA visualization in gel electrophoresis and does not efficiently detect single-stranded DNA or RNA.

How does CelRed compare to ethidium bromide in sensitivity and safety?

CelRed exhibits comparable or superior sensitivity to ethidium bromide while offering significantly better safety. CelRed is less mutagenic, less toxic, and environmentally safer. Both stains provide similar detection limits in gel electrophoresis, but CelRed reduces occupational and environmental hazards.

Do I need UV light to visualize CelRed-stained gels?

Yes, CelRed requires UV light (typically 365 nm or longer wavelengths) for visualization. The stain fluoresces under UV illumination. Unlike some alternative stains, standard blue or green light is insufficient - UV transillumination is necessary for optimal fluorescent signal detection.

Can CelRed be used for both pre-staining and post-staining?

CelRed works effectively for both pre-staining (adding to gel before electrophoresis) and post-staining (staining completed gel). Post-staining is more common and provides flexibility in workflow. Pre-staining reduces handling steps but may slightly increase background fluorescence.

How to store CelRed reagent, and how long does it remain stable?

CelRed is typically stored at room temperature (15-25°C) or 4°C, depending on formulation. Aqueous solutions remain stable for 12-24 months when stored in amber bottles away from light. Keep containers tightly sealed to prevent evaporation and contamination. Always refer to product-specific storage instructions.
