The tumor necrosis factor (TNF-alpha) is a multifaceted polypeptide cytokine known as a mediator of inflammation and immunity. It may mediate some of the significant changes in cellular homeostasis which accompany the invasion of the mammalian host by viruses, bacteria, and parasites.
