Caldesmon is a calmodulin- and actin-binding protein that plays an essential role in the regulation of smooth muscle and nonmuscle contraction. The conserved domain of caldesmon possesses the binding activities to Ca(2+)-calmodulin, actin, tropomyosin, myosin, and phospholipids.
